At the Whakatane Golf Club we are fortunate to possess one of the finest golf courses in the Bay of Plenty, New Zealand. With our fast running greens and lush forgiving fairways, the course (See PANORAMIC VIEWS) offers golfers, at all levels, a challenging and rewarding 18 holes. Our par 70, 6009m course is located 10 minutes from the town centre, adjacent to the airport.

The Bay of Plenty is renowned for its great weather and Whakatane regularly comes top of the table for annual hours of sunshine in New Zealand. For golfing VISITORS and their families there are many other attractions in the area, including close-by Whale Island and White Island, New Zealand's active volcano, accessible by tourist vessels and by air.

Special Events include major regional and national championships annually. Our national veterans tournaments even attract entrants from overseas. During 2011 we were pleased to welcome competitors to the Bay of Plenty Open Championship in August and ladies from all over New Zealand for the Toro Inter-Provincial Championship in December.

Attracting NEW MEMBERS is a high priority. For potential new members who might be beginners, the Club organises free 'Have a Go Days' when people have the game explained and hit some balls, just to see if they might like it. Choices of joining packages are offered, recognising that circumstances vary for different people.

The Pro Shop, staffed by Paul Gundersen and Anthony Barkley, is the only fully stocked golf equipment store in the Eastern Bay of Plenty. Apart from the range of various clubs, balls, accessories, bags, trundlers, mens and ladies clothing, they will repair your old clubs or customise new clubs to suit your specific requirements. As Paul says, "You name it, we can get it!"

We have excellent club-house FACILITIES, including the traditional "19th Hole" lounge bar and a restaurant/cafeteria serving tasty home-made snacks and meals. These facilities are available to non-members for special functions such as weddings, dinners, business seminars, or for package deals including golf, prizegiving and entertainment.

Encouraging the young of Whakatane to take up golf is very important and our 'Pro', Anthony Barkley, is very active in giving lessons, to beginners and golfers of all ages/handicaps. Junior memberships are intended to be affordable for all. Regional junior tournaments are organised regularly.

Newsletter for Ladies 08 May 12

Message from your Club Captain.

Hello everyone. I thought that as so much has been happening, I would let you all know about it.

Firstly, you have a great committee who work their socks off so that the golf runs smoothly. Please thank them occassionally, and help by filling your cards in neatly, not bending them so that they rip, writing numbers clearly, and signing them.It takes 2 seconds to process a correctly filled -in card, and 20 or more to process a torn, messy, incorrect one. If you want results quickly, you know what to do.I must say most of you do a good job with your cards, so thankyou for that.

Now there was a rumour that I had had a hole-in-one!! Nice, and it was a change to have been given credit for something nice that I didn't do, instead of all the bad stuff I have been up to!!

Anyway Jen Ingle had a hole-in-one on the 16th last month. Well done Jen.

Over the summer Dawn Merrie did a heap of baking for our Wednesdays Swannies Days raffles, and we raised just over $1200.00.Dawn has agreed that this money is to be used

for new vinyl in the womens toilet area.We need around $250.00 more to complete the job, and we have been thinking of ways to raise the shortfall.

Ideas are; 1. a dinner here, 2. a car-boot sale in the carpark, 3. cake/book sale day. Any other ideas, or are there any donations forthcoming?

Our Club Pennant team came 3rd this year. The last day's play was exciting and at the end of play we had 7 points, Kawerau had 7 points, Ohope and Opotiki had 8 points.

Ohope and Opotiki had a play-off and Ohope won. Well done all those who played on the 3 days of competition.

The Silver pennant team has done extremely well, too. They lead their section.

Their semi-final is at Tauranga on 13th May. We wish them all the best.

The Bay Open is coming up again, and we need your help. There are lots of jobs to be done. I will be asking for volunteers for spotting, starting, registration, etc.etc.If you would like to help us, get in touch with me or Anne, some of the jobs are for 1 day other jobs we need people every day.

Collen Meikle has had a spell in hospital, she is home again and John no longer has to iron his undies!!Antoinette is back playing golf after her knee surgery.

If you know of anyone from our women's golf who has had illness, let me know as we like to keep in touch with people and try to cheer them up a bit.See you at the Club. Pat.
